Types of Ventilation Systems in Restaurants
Before making an investment, one should know what are the different types of ventilation systems that can be installed in a restaurant. There are several types of ventilation systems to choose from depending on the indoor area and its natural supply of air to provide a healthy breathing environment for the customers.
Natural Ventilation
Clean and fresh air from natural sources is the ideal type of natural ventilation. It is a process of supplying clean air from outside and removing stale air from inside without the use of any mechanical system. Natural ventilation is achieved through openings, such as windows or doors, by creating a pressure difference between inside and outside the building. Although Natural ventilation gives you humidity control, lower operating and maintenance costs, better health, and access to daylight, it always depends on the outside environment and is less effective in extreme climates. Moreover, natural ventilation is suitable for areas less than 6m wide. So it is not too suitable for those restaurants which are populated and big.
Mechanical Ventilation
Mechanical ventilation is a process of achieving controlled airflow and providing ventilation through mechanical methods. Mechanical ventilation systems may include fans that can either be installed directly in windows or walls, or in the air ducts for supplying outdoor air into the building. There are typically four types of mechanical ventilation systems that can be employed according to the building’s requirements. i.e
- Exhaust-only ventilation systems
- Supply-only ventilation systems
- Balanced ventilation
- Energy recovery systems.
Exhaust Ventilation
Exhaust ventilation systems operate by sucking the stale air out via the exhaust mechanism through a duct. Exhaust depressurizes the building and reduces the inside air pressure so it’s below outdoor air pressure. It‘s then replaced by fresh air from outside. It saves the area from build-up steam or humidity
Supply Ventilation
Supply ventilation works opposite exhaust ventilation. It uses several fans to pressurize the area by forcing outdoor air indoors while the air escapes outdoors via doors, windows, holes, or purpose-built ducts. Supply ventilation systems work best in hot or mixed climates. Because it pressurizes the area, it has the potential to increase moisture in cold climates. supply ventilation systems are relatively simple and inexpensive to install. Examples of supply-only systems are an attic HVAC fan. The supply ventilation system is not too widely used.
